IAB to define click measurement guidelines to benefit PPC advertisers

IAB press release, On Target staff

Singapore, August 06, 2006

The Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) is forming a Click Measurement Working Group to create a set of Click Measurement Guidelines for the pay-per-click marketing industry.

The guidelines will be developed in association with the Media Rating Council (MRC) and will provide a detailed definition of a "click". The guidelines will also develop the standard against which clicks will be measured, and how invalid/ fraudulent clicks will be identified.

All the major search engines (effectively, media companies)- Google, Yahoo!, MSN, Looksmart, Ask.com- have indicated their participation in this Working Group

The formation of this group is to ensure transparency and industry oversight in the measurement of this fast growing aspect of interactive media. Significantly, the guidelines will also outline an industry driven auditing and certification recommendation for any organization involved in performance based marketing like search engines, ad networks, third party ad servers or any company that counts clicks as a part of the media currency.

These guidelines are part of the broader Global Ad Impression Guidelines that were launched in 2004 and follow the recent release of the Broadband Measurement Guidelines.

With these guidelines, marketers will have a standard basis for consistent and reliable measurement of performance based marketing. Moreover, once independent auditing against these guidelines is initiated, advertisers will have greater assurance and belief in their internet marketing spend.

"Click Measurement is the next phase of the Interactive industry's groundbreaking Global Measurement Guidelines initiative," says Greg Stuart, CEO of the IAB. "These guidelines demonstrate our continued commitment to being the most accountable advertising medium and providing marketers with the highest possible level of transparency."
