Tips to increase Facebook engagement

Improving the engagement metrics of your Facebook page takes time and effort, but there are certain strategies that can help you increase your page’s reach and engagement. Follow these tips to increase engagement on Facebook.

1. Post useful content of value to your audience

In the age of ‘busyness’ and distractions and an era of 15-second reels and shorts, you get a very small window to grab the attention of your audience.

So, do not post random content which might not look appealing or won’t be of any use to your audience. Try and make each of your posts interesting, entertaining and offers some value to your current or potential followers.

Ideally, adopt a multi-format content approach, i.e. use a combination of images, typographical posts, videos, live videos, check-ins (if applicable), questions, polls, contests and giveaways.

2. Share content when your audience is active

This is an oft-ignored consideration. Do not publish a post simply because you are free at that moment; post when your audience is most likely to be active. This will increase the likelihood of your content being visible to your target audience when they check their Facebook account and there is a greater possibility that they would engage with it. Sporadic posting is certainly not a good idea.

Take advantage of the option to schedule posts for Facebook pages. Plan posts when you can amid your busy schedule, and they can be published when your audience is active online.

Do monitor and measure the engagement metrics for your posts to get a better understanding of your audience. It will involve some experiments and iterations over a couple of months to get a reasonable insight into your audience’s preferences and behavioural patterns, but such an exercise will certainly be valuable.

3. Be consistent with content sharing

Post regularly. While it may seem daunting at first, it is possible when you organise your content in advance. To maintain consistency, create a content calendar. Most studies agree that one post a day is optimal, with a maximum of two posts per day. This is probably true for a large number of businesses, though may be very different for certain other types such as large e-commerce sites or gaming/entertainment/ media businesses.

As per Hubspot , pages under 10,000 fans had a 50% drop in engagement per post if they posted two or more posts a day. However, Facebook pages with 10,000+ followers experienced greater clicks per post by posting more often.

4. Interact with your audience: Ask questions, post polls and be responsive

Questions and polls are the among the best means to increase engagement. They facilitate interaction and let the audience know that you care about their answers, feedback and opinions.

Responding to comments on your posts demonstrates to your audience that you appreciate the time they invested on your page and that you are interested in what they have to say. As a result, more people will interact with your content.

Remember, reciprocity is important to build long-term trust. It is true in the virtual world of social media as much as it is in real life.

5. Make the most of Facebook Reels

You can get more interaction from Facebook users, even those who aren’t your followers yet, by making engaging Reels.

Reels are an amazing way to reflect your brand image and provide content that appeals to your target market in a more entertaining way. Adding trending music and text overlays, integrating transitions between clips or incorporating some effects can make your reels even more interesting and visible. Reels are also highlighted in a different section of the Facebook app, thus enabling a new set of people discover your page.

6. Use ‘Stories’

Sharing each of your posts on ‘stories’ at intervals helps people who missed a post find it. You can share little details about your brand or related interesting content on stories as well.

Use the other features available like stickers, location, tagging, polls, etc. to create compelling stories. Using a couple of hashtags in the stories helps you reach a larger audience.

7. Go ‘Live’ once in a while

Facebook Live videos offer a great opportunity to connect directly with your followers. You can take and answer questions they have in real-time. Videos have a rather longer lifespan on the platform than some of the other content types. The video stays on your page even after the Live stream has ended and so can get greater engagement over a longer duration.

8. Engage first with your target audience

If you want engagement, may be you need to take the first step and lead the way! Follow relevant hashtags for your category as a page. Try to engage on recent posts via comments as per their content. This will make a few of them check out your latest posts and possibly Like / Follow your page if they aren’t doing so already.

9. Run contests, promotions, and giveaways

Incentivising your audience is a great way to attract new followers and encourage participation and engagement. Of course, you should take care to be compliant with not only Facebook’s guidelines and policies on such promotions but also those of your own industry. For example, there are some strict regulations on healthcare marketing in Singapore, especially with respect to luring audiences via incentives.

10. Collaborate to win

Collaborating with other pages in your niche is a win-win for all the parties involved. It can enable each of the collaborating pages to tap a new audience and gain more followers.

In summary, the key to tackle the engagement challenge on Facebook is to be consistent, stay updated, be proactive with engagement and most importantly, offering valuable and interesting content.
